چکیده

We introduce a simple method for determining pulsation velocities of Cepheid variables; namely, the matching of observed spectral line profiles in both shape and absolute position with model profiles. This approach avoids the ambiguous meaning of radial velocity for asymmetric lines, and it avoids the awkward projection factor (the “p” factor) used to expand radial velocities to pulsation velocities. In this investigation, we employ a simple pure-geometry model that reproduces all the major features in the observations. We illustrate the method using spectroscopic observations of z Gem, h Aql, and d Cep taken at the Elginfield Observatory, and derive the absolute radius changes.

LINEAR PULSATION CHARACTERISTICS OF MIRA VARIABLE STARS

The linear adiabatic pulsation-periods of Mira variable stars have been derived. Approximately 2701[1]models were calculated for M = 0.7 MΘ to 2 MΘ stars with radii from 180 RΘ to 340 RΘ and luminosities from 2800 LΘ to 10,000 LΘ. The chemical composition of all models is (X,Z) = (0.7,0.02). From the result of this study, linear relations on Luminosity-Period-Mass relationship and luminosity-pe...

Population II standard candle calibration of the Fundamental Plane of groups and clusters of galaxies and the Hubble Constant

Hubble’s constant (H0) is calculated using the Fundamental Plane (FP) relation between half-light radius, surface brightness, and velocity dispersion for groups and clusters of galaxies. The Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB), a standard candle based on the constant luminosity of low-mass stars at helium core flash, is used to calibrate the cluster FP. TRGB stars yield the distances to the near...

Cepheid variables in the LMC cluster NGC 1866. I. New BVRI CCD photometry

We report BV (RI)C CCD photometric data for a group of seven Cepheid variables in the young, rich cluster NGC 1866 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The photometry was obtained as part of a program to determine accurate distances to these Cepheids by means of the infrared surface brightness technique, and to improve the LMC Cepheid database for constructing Cepheid PL and PLC relations. Using the ...

Spectroscopic Binary Mass Determination using Relativity

High-precision radial-velocity techniques, which enabled the detection of extrasolar planets are now sensitive to relativistic effects in the data of spectroscopic binary stars (SBs). We show how these effects can be used to derive the absolute masses of the components of eclipsing single-lined SBs and double-lined SBs from Doppler measurements alone. High-precision stellar spectroscopy can thu...

An improved calibration of Cepheid visual and infrared surface brightness relations from accurate angular diameter measurements of cool giants and supergiants

We have calibrated optical and near-infrared surface brightness – colour relations for cool giant and supergiant stars usinghigh-precision angular diameters of these stars determined from Michelson interferometry. We find that the giant and supergiant relations are undistinguishable over a wide range of intrinsic colours. We independently determine the slopes of these relations obeyed byCepheid...
